I have now figured out how to play this, although it was waaaaay easier when I wasn't near fire imps, didn't opt for an anvil at the start of the game, wasn't ambushed by elves and, well, basically had a safe area. I have 57 dwarves in my little colony now, and the only issue I continue to have is that they drink faster than I can create barrels and/or brew alcomohol. I've only just figured out what the garbage dump is and how wonderful it is for clearing out stockpile areas of stone.
I find it much, much easier with graphics. If I'm ever playing the EoFF one, people who don't know what DF is will at least be able to have some vague understanding of what's going on.
