I hate how Vaan looks as well, but it's mostly because of his face. A masculine face with soft in it is nice in my opinion, but Vaan's face is just overboard, and he looks way too feminine in combination with his questionable clothing. It's basically like mixing a salty dish with... more salt, or pouring sugar into a milk shake. If Vaan had a more masculine/harder appearance in his hair and face, and perhaps a bit more muscle on his body, then the clothes might have been a good complement for those features I think.
