Thread: Bayonetta

    Default Bayonetta

So I didn't see a topic about this in the first several pages. Bayonetta seems to be garnering a lot of hype, but to me the game has just looked silly. The concept seems over the top, the character seems ridiculously sexualized and the action seems so frantic that I couldn't imagine controlling it. So what's the deal with a 40/40 from Famitsu for such a game. Is it just because of the way it appeals to a Japanese audience?

Well, I tried the demo last night because when something gets this type of press I want to see what the deal is... preconceived thoughts be damned.

It... was... awesome. I loved it and my wife loved it. We both went in thinking how silly it seemed and felt that way through most of the tutorial. At some point we realized that the game is almost a caricature of itself. It's like it's parodying the over-sexy, ridiculous over-powered character thing.

One of the first things that struck me were the incredibly fluid controls. It's something you can't explain... you just have to feel how it controls. The combat seems to have unusual depth. If you want to just button-mash your way through, you probably could on easier modes. If you want more, you can set up insane combos.

The visuals are stunning and anything you've seen in stills on the internet or anywhere else will not do the game justice. The characters and backgrounds are simply gorgeous and the animations are awe-inspiring.

Each area has little trophies and stuff and that's gonna be great for replay for me personally (and other completionists).

My advice, no matter how silly or ridiculous you think it is... no matter how offensively sexy the character is to you.... please try the demo on PS3/360. The demo certainly changed my mind about the game and I'd say it certain lives up to the scores, hype and accolades so far. I can't wait to play the whole thing.

The game doesn't seem exactly like Devil May Cry, but with a woman dopes it? I have DMC3 and played through about 60% of it and I thought it was just alright. The game looks nice but i hear too many comparisons about the DMC.

Ever since I saw the first teaser trailer, a year or two ago, I've wanted to play it! It looks awesome!

I've played the demo about four times now, and love it. Definitely looking forward to playing through the whole game. The combat is ridiculously fluid and allows for insane combos, especially with the weapon swapping aspect.
Boy am I an unfunny ass.

I downloaded the demo, but ive been hearing that Sega messed up the PS3 port, but they asked sony to help them fix it. Hopefully they can get it on par, cause ive seen the 360 version and it looks much better. It would of been fine if I hadnt seen it I probably wouldnt have cared
I wouldnt mind it being graphically inferior but it also has bad framerate

Ive been hearing nothing but praise for the gameplay though so I will play it later.

Only seen some trailers of it, and it does like pretty promising. I mean, the girl has that sexy secretary look and guns in her heels.. what more needs to be in this game!?

Anyway, this game is probably going to be a success.

Even if it was just DMC with a chick, I'd get it. The man who created Devil May Cry (and Viewtiful Joe and Okami) also made this game.

It sucks that the PS3 version in Japan was technically inferior, but all reports say that it's still a fine game. So if you have a PS3, and even if Sega doesn't 'fix' it, I don't think you should be too worried about it.

The last DMC game did pretty well from what I recall, but this does not have the brand recognition behind it. Sega's doing a much better job of advertising this than they did with either Yakuza or Valkyria Chronicles, so I hope this game does do well for them (and Platinum).

I want this game as well, just don't know if it's my priority considering the time period it is being released, and my current back library.

Does anyone know if the problems with the PS3 version vs the 360 version are really all that noticeable?

I have both consoles but really would prefer to play on my PS3!

    Sadly, yes, it's quite bad.

Bayonetta Video Game, PS3/360 Demo Comparison HD | Game Trailers & Videos | GameTrailers.com

While the color richness could be cleaned up by some tweaking on your end, the lack of clarity in all of the backgrounds is pretty bad.

Bayonetta PS3 vs 360 performance data revealed

Performance also takes a hit, but might not be noticeable.

From what I've heard the improvements are to glitches and the such in the port rather than specifically on the graphical shortcomings.

More detail Face-Off: Bayonetta | DigitalFoundry (probably where that guy got the 'performance data' from)

I just finished the ps3 demo and the only time I noticed framerate drops were during the cutscenes. If it weren't for the publicized fact that the 360 version is smoother, i would have assumed it was normal as a lot of games in the ps2 era and even today still have choppy framerates during cinematics. Also, you should know that a lot of the comparison videos don't have the ps3 running on optimal settings. You need Full RGB range and Super White turned on, and from there you adjust your brightness settings to where the blacks seem as sharp as they need to be, and a lot of sites simply don't do this. With all of that, I have to say the game looks great running on the PS3.

With all that technical crap out of the way, I have to say the game is very fun. Over the top, action packed, and a great art style to bring it all together. The torture moves are great add-ons, and all of the animations and climax sequences just make this a great package.

That said, I've been playing God of War recently since the collection came out and Bayonetta is even more of a button masher than that game. I just keep pressing a series of triangles and finish it off with a circle, or vice versa, and just expect the big hair boot to come out at random times. I pretty much don't even bother dodging. I'm sure this will probably change fast as the game goes on, but I had to get that out of the way.

What stood out to me the most though was the sound. I was shocked to find out SEGA is only the publisher as the music is very reminiscent of the Genesis days to me. The sound effects as well are all very arcadey and this seems to be a game where you'll be going back over and over again to improve your combos and scores. Definitely a lot of fun.

Sadly, i'll probably be too busy with MAG, White Knight Chronicles, Bad Company 2, Heavy Rain, and this game's direct adversary, God of War III to bother picking this up. I'll probably wait till its $40 or so to get my copy.

Ok I just tried the demo and it is very fun, even if I never was much a fan of these kinds of games.

Didnt notice any framerate drop, but then again I hardly ever do.
The only thing that bothered me was the extreme blurriness of the graphics which ended up really hurting my eyes, and I have good eyes. If it was a little sharper it would of not put that much strain on me.
