Shouldn't that have caused Blindness or something? And what do those shopkeepers do with all this crap you sell them? There's more to it than just making Bazaar items.
Loot is pretty much the replacement for earning gil from battles. It does make sense that killing a wolf would award you a pelt rather than 372 gil.
The concept of receiving loot from monsters reminded me too much of a massively multiplayer online RPG.
It does seem like the next step rather than arbitrarily receiving currency from monsters, but, yes, then you end up with odd instances of stealing things that seem vital to a monster's function. Taking a pelt from a monster? No problem. Taking an eyeball from a demon? No problem.
