I'm not sure as I never got a chance to play the original but I would assume so. Then again, the game has two difficulty modes so there is a chance the "Easy" mode makes things slightly less annoying but it also could just mean that enemies drop more gil and things are less expensive. I'm currently playing in Normal Mode which is suppose to be exactly like the NES title.
