Just dropping in to post what I post every time the subject of advertising comes up.

By the way, if anyone here is in marketing or advertising...kill yourself. Thank you. Just planting seeds, planting seeds is all I'm doing. No joke here, really. Seriously, kill yourself, you have no rationalization for what you do, you are Satan's little helpers. Kill yourself, kill yourself, kill yourself now. Now, back to the show. Seriously, I know the marketing people: 'There's gonna be a joke comin' up.' There's no smurfin' joke. Suck a tail pipe, hang yourself...borrow a pistol from an NRA buddy, do something...rid the world of your evil smurfin' presence, OK, back to the show.

You know what bugs me though, everyone here in marketing is now thinking the same thing, 'Oh, cool, Bill's going for that anti-marketing dollar, that's a huge market.'

Stop turning everything into a dollar sign, please!

'Ooh, the plea-for-sanity dollar. That's a huge market! Look at our research!'

I don't understand this.

The Letterman one was unexpected and funny. None of the others really did it for me.

Also without ads, the show we're 'getting back to' wouldn't exist in the first place.

Yes, it's rather unfortunate that the television industry and journalism and other similar industries depends on advertisements for its well-being. To be honest I think that's part of the reason journalism is suffering lately - they just can't compete with the internet, so advertisers are leaving in droves. There are other models for television and newspapers which would obsolete the need for advertisements - the BBC is one. However, I doubt the political will to bring about such a system exists in America.
