A good friend of mine happens to be under the impression that reading gives him a headache, and this is his excuse for being dumb. Can reading really give someone a headache?

yes. Either the thing that you are reading has so much BS in it that the content induces headaches or there is no proper lighting so you strain your eyes and get a headache.![]()
Maybe his eyes are sub-par and he really should be wearing glasses. Have him go see an optician.
everything is wrapped in gray

can you hear me in the void?
I get headaches while trying to read small text while in motion! It is all about eyestrain!
I get headaches sometimes if I've been on the computer all day. Then again, I tend to read by very low light.
Yes, but it's usually not that chronic. Eye-strain is a common cause of headaches, and will definitely exacerbate a current one. If reading always gives him a headache, then perhaps he needs reading glasses.
I love reading practically everything... Maybe thats why some people call me Murtipedia cause I always come up with interesting tidbits of facts.
Seriously ask if he reads in low light or he finds the text too small or blurry... Glasses shall it be then if so!

I'm short-sighted and I wear glasses for that. I find that taking off my glasses makes reading much more comfortable for me.
Reading in dim lighting, late at night, or in a moving vehicle, I can understand. But reading in general shouldn't cause headaches.
Reading is an awful place and often causes me headaches![]()
When stupid people try to read to become smart via reading, they get headaches from the overload of knowledge that they couldn't possibly comprehend.
Or he needs glasses![]()
