Please help me in choosing web hosting

Hi everyone,
I am sorry for possible offtopic, but I need your help in find new web hosting provider as soon as possible, because my current host (ixwebhosting.com) is kicking me off, they say 'your account is using a lot server resources', but my website gets only about 200 visitors per day and my disk usage is 1500 MB (maybe they do not like that?)

Anyway, what would be your recommendations for getting reliable web hosting? Where are you hosting your websites? Are you happy with your providers?

I am now checking Hosting24.com - First Class Web Hosting Services - offer looks very nice, but is it real that they can provide unlimited disk space?
I have contacted them about this question and they say something that "These days 500GB disk drive costs only $30 per month, so if some day we will run out of disk space we will simply add new 500GB disk drive with almost zero costs and you can continue uploading without any problems".

What do you think about it? Maybe things have changed in last 4 years? With my current provider I get only 2GB of disk space for $10 per month..
Any ideas and suggestions are much appreciated.

I'm actually in the process of choosing one myself and while I don't have much experience in webhosts myself, I have looked around quite a bit at review sites, comparisons and so on (it's incredibly common that the offer will look great but then most reviews will give lousy scores in reliability and support issues). Granted, there are horror stories for every single host you can find, but there are some who seem to do comparatively really well; I'm currently looking at Host Gator who are a bit more pricey than average, but from reviews and comparisons they provide pretty high quality hosting. I'm thinking I'll probably end up going with them.

It should be noted that a lot of web hosts will shut you out if the scripts you run are very intensive for the server to process, especially if you're slowing things down for other customers. The same goes for if you hog up all the bandwidth on the server, regardless of whether it says "Unlimited bandwidth" or not. If it's important to you not to have to worry about this you may need to look into paying to get a dedicated server. I don't know of the top of my head which hosts offer that service, though.

The general consensus about Dreamhost, from what I've read in reviews, seems to be that they used to be one of the absolute best but the last few years they've really declined, having lots of downtime, shutting out tons of users and being terrible with support. Again, just what I've read. I was going to go with them at first since I'd heard long ago how great they were, but after reading up on it I've been really discouraged from it.

*puke* I had so many little issues. Turned out it was mainly confusion on my part thinking I had a better package than I did. Still, I Am no longer with them. Really, I do have to say they were quite good - but different for what I needed. Now I just need a decent free dynamic dns system that will let me use my own domain name.

Yams turned me on to resellarzoom a while back. They are badass for what I want/need. ( a basic set up elsewhere for live crap. )

Definitely the best option for you is to install a webserver on your own machine. I recommend Apache, along with modules for whichever scripting language you're planning to use (PHP, JSP, whichever).

WAMP is pretty good for this.

I've been using 1&1 for about 10 years now with no problems, but I haven't put a lot of load on it; I've just topped 500MB (not GB, MB) recently, and didn't even know I had SSH access until last month. Since then I've been SSH'ing in to do EVERYTHING, even basic text file edits/renames, just because I can. Most packages allow scripting in PHP, Perl, and Python (2.4) and come with at least one MySQL database.

If you need Ruby or PostgreSQL, I hear good things about Timbury Web Hosting

1&1's running on Debian, Timbury on CentOS -- so you're more likely to get up-to-date versions of scripting languages with Tim, considering Debian's "Stable as hell or gtfo" philosophy.
