I still didn't think it was a cheap sacrifice at all. Even if they did get healed, they did not have that intention.
To me, it's kind of like a significant other who stays by your side all night when you're sick, and ends up getting sick as well trying to make sure you were taken care of.

Cid from IV seems to have somewhat of a following, but I never really liked him all that much.
What annoyed me most is that when you examined them after, it would open up the Items menu and i remember I tried EVERYTHING, convinced there was a way to change them back.
Despite all kinds of rumors about a "Basilisk's Fang" and the like, the item window only opens so you can try using Golden Needles on them and be reminded of that same line explaining why that won't work.
Oooooh, haha, I have a terrible memory. I guess I must have just tried Golden Needle and was irked it didn't work and blew it up in my mind to something grandeose. Haha.
