Sometime in the (hopefully) near future, I hope to get either a new desktop or a new laptop, depending on how this here PC makes it through until I get the funding.
The question is, should I stay with Vista, or should I go immediately to 7?

7 is better in pretty much every way.
And the definitive keyword is 'pretty'.
Of course, it's not the top performance OS, but it's still better than Vista is.
With 7 out, there is no reason to use vista. Dig up that mount of dirt in the back yard, open the rusty box, and place your vista cd in it right along side Windows ME. Place the box in the hole, and bury it.
The end.
Microsoft Bamboozled us all again.
Yeah, 7 is gonna get your farther than Vista will. I'm pretty sure you're not gonna find anyone sane saying anything to the contrary anywhere. xD
It's always better to go with the odd release over the even ones when it comes to Windows. Vista really isn't that much worse if you're just a casual user, but I've heard of local shops refusing to fix any computers with Vista because they're poo heads who shouldn't do computer maintenance for a living. I have Vista and I like it just fine. Anyway, go with 7. Just keep in mind that it's a new operating system, and the usual issues with getting a new operating system will still apply.
Having just switched over from Windows Vista to Windows Seven myself, I would undoubtedly recommend Seven. Besides the fancy stuff that I really don't care about, it's much faster and it seems to have gotten rid of problems my computer would occasionally having when booting up.
Don't you mean Windows Vista Service Pack Windows 7? o.O
I love Windows 7. It's absolutely amazing, super gorgeous and lush in its presentation, and it's compatibility with older software is, in some ways, better than even windows XP.
I'm totally sold on 7 now, great job guysthanks for the advice~
Following on from Celes' question, which version of 7 do you guys suggest? Is it worth getting Pro purely for the "XP Mode"?
Bow before the mighty Javoo!
I have Home Premium (because let's face it they don't sell standard) I don't see the point of buying the fancier ones, even with "XP Mode".
Looking at the differences between the versions, I think I'd probably go for Pro just for the remote desktop server support, and perhaps the encrypting file system support, if I was to use Win7. Don't see much point in XP mode either to be honest, I have other methods if I really need virtualisation anyway![]()
I understand that some games work in XP mode only.

There's just no reason to go for Vista rather than 7. Vista has nothing 7 doesn't have, and 7 does have things Vista doesn't have. If you get them both for the same price it's like choosing between... Half of win7 and all of win7.
everything is wrapped in gray
i'm focusing on your image
can you hear me in the void?
XP Mode is a pain to use and I've not come across a game yet that without some messing around I can't get working on 7.
