    Extention of developers manhood. That is what I think. There can be no other rational explanation for that thing.

    Then again, it might be a (ahem) subtle way of visually showing the inadequacy Cloud feels when compared to Sephiroth, who has a monstrously long (but slender) "sword". One analogy might be that their manly "weapons" actually form a beautiful balance: Clouds girth against Sephiroth's length. Oh, how poetic... if only they made union!
