Thread: Do you know any good action-RPGs for the SNES?

Default Do you know any good action-RPGs for the SNES?

To be honest I've never been a big fan of the ATB system found in so many RPGs, I prefer when the battles flash by and you still get to enjoy the EXP and Leveling up thing.
So far I think Secret of Mana has done the best job (maybe also Zelda 2 for the NES and Tales of Destiny for PlayStation), and I was wondering if you know any similar games to these?
I'm chiefly looking for games in the SNES format, but any advice is welcome.

I've heard good things about Terranigma.

Speaking of Terranigma, there's also Illusion of Gaia.

Ah yes, rather decent game although the translation is utterly horrible.

Thank you, I might try Terranigma tonight.
The translation part doesn't bother me either since I love Japanese and always try to play all RPGs in Japanese.

Well, I should clarify that I can't be sure if it was actually the translation or the original script in Illusion of Gaia that blew. Just... the point of view flip-flops so often and randomly that it hurts my head to try to make sense of it sometimes.

Tales of Phantasia is one of my all-time favourite games because battle system. No ATB, all action. =]

If you like Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3 is superior to it in most ways that matter (and as a bonus, unless you apply a translation patch, it's in Japanese).

The Soul Blazer games—Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma—have varying levels of quality when it comes to the actual action, but they're all permeated by a common sense of bittersweet atmosphere and melancholy. The music goes a long way, in particular.

I was going to say Terranigma and Soulblazer when I saw the thread title, but I see they are taken care of. Secret of Mana is cool too, although I never really got far in it.

Yeah, Illusion of Gaia love! I second the whole Quintet trilogy (Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma).
Also, if you'll be playing in Japanese I've heard Alcahest is alright. Never came out here, but supposedly it's good fun.
Boy am I an unfunny ass.

Star Ocean and Tales of Phantasia were the very first games that came to mind. If you liked Tales of Destiny, you should definitely enjoy Phantasia.

Terranigma and Seiken Densetsu 3 are also great.

Well, if we can get off of the SNES for a minute, I'd strongly recommend Sword of Mana for the GBA (or your computer. and maybe even Children of Mana for the DS.

Also, the little-known Ys series is amazing. The first two are available as remakes on the DS and for the computer, but you can find the original version on the Virtual Consul on the Wii. Ys III was on the SNES, but that version sucks in comparison to the remake made for the computer. There was a great SNES Ys IV. There is no English version of Ys V anywhere, but there is a PS2 Ys VI that is amazing. Seriously, get you some Ys, you'll LOVE it!
