St George is the patron saint of Blighty. He's also an important said throughout Europe many countries and cities have adopted the cross (England, Georgia, Genoa, Milan, Barcelona). He wasn't even English though. He was Roman & is the most venerated Saint in the Roman Catholic church.
In fact the only Patron Saint of the Brirish Isles that was actually born on the British Isles was St. David of Wales.

It's ANZAC day here. We commemorate the Aussies and Kiwis who gave their lives fighting in Gallipoli back in WW1.
But I can get on the back of this celebration. The St. George-Illawarra Dragons rugby league team is playing later today.
Isn't St George's the day when Irish people dress up in boring colours and queue for hours?
