I wear $10 wayfarer's by choice. It worked out well, too; I dropped them the other day and scratched the frames.

Sunglasses are made so less light in general goes through them. Your eyes will react by enlarging the pupils so they can take in as much of the limited light as they can. However if the sunglasses are not able to absorb UV light as well as visible light then the same amount of UV that would normally get to the eye still gets there, but now it has a larger area where it can hit. Prolong exposure will result in damage to the eye.
qwerty just instilled a lot of (probably irrational) fear in me. I'm never going outside again without my eyes closed.
I don't go outside without a HAZMAT suit on anyway so I'm safe.

Big sunglasses help reduce the wrinkles around your eyes (crows feet) because you don't squint in the sun! I love wearing my sunglasses. I'm not sure if they have UV protection or not though.
