For a shield that's magical

Seems to be referring to the begging play, where one needs to impress the nobles to get an item.

Brings to mind the four elemental magic mirrors that one attains at Ipsen's Castle.

Brings to mind the Shimmering Isle, unless I'm off course with this one.

The healing that occurs with the gemstones one holds.
This entire thing makes me think the answer is an enemy....

For a shield that's magical The moonstone changes Carbuncle's summon ability to Pearl Light (Protect and Shell on the whole party)

Is quite divine The moonstone and elixir synthesize pearl rouge (halves Holy damage and increases Water damage)
Its healing is grand
With more on hand More moonstones = more HP when used as an item
