It is indeed because you live in the UK. I live in Norway and I'm also bitter because of all the great PSN titles USA gets while we don't.
Just create a second account with a made up American address and you're good to go

That's a good question. About the currency I mean. It's probably against their Terms of Service, but I doubt they'd try to like, go there and make sure it's a real address.
