I will comply with this proposition when people start pronouncing the word Southern properly. "South-ern" not "Su-thern". It's right there. In the letters. None of the other directions, East, West, or North are mangled in such a way.

This is silly. Phonology and orthography are completely different and it's not like you can change pronunciation like that o.o. I suspect it loses the diphthong because it would make the syllable too heavy with it, but I'm not too sure.

I dunno, I pronounce southern as "suh-thern" since it sounds about right to me, even though I say south with the proper "ou" sound.
