smiley or emoticon? which is which?

Emoticon is the word I change to after I type out 'smilie' and think it doesnt look like it's spelt right and I cant be bothered to look it up.

Lol, it's just that I've always called colourful and/or moving smilies emoticons, but I call those of punctuation marks like : ) or : '(, smilies. xD

I know lol it's liek when I was 16 it was all and and I think some people even did but that was pretty hard core but then i learned how to '][''/[]D3 |_;|< 3 [)|$ so den I was so cool y'know? 1990s was so awesom^ ^_^

I guess the deciding factor in my mind is "can something that is not an image necessarily be an 'icon?"

but I always get it backwards and call graphical smileys and text emoticons anyway. lol!

both are both BUT smiley's only refer to the ones with smiles eg. : ) or , or : D however emoticons refer to any emotion

Emoticon and smiley are interchangeable to me if you're talking about graphical and/or text versions. Emoticon is the proper term, though.

A smiley is technically just , but can refer to any emoticons as well.
