I have good news to you then.For me, the disappointment comes when Ultimecia is introduced, because Edea's flair of mystery disappears forever, and she becomes completely unimportant. I like her best as the main villain.
Ulti=Edea on a different timeline.

I sort of liked the first disc. On this playthrough I'm doing now. The beginning seemed to drag on for me with the unskippable tutorials and Quistis.
I didn't really mind the orphanage or Ultimecia twist, both of those could've just have been done better though. The party also seemed to neglect the GF factor after that part of the game too. I figured after the events of the game they got rid of them, but it would've been a bit better if it was mentioned. I accidentally skipped the part in Disc 2 where I was suppose to go to Edea's house and went straight into the Garden conflict.
The space scene still seemed touching but not as touching the third time around. Found myself dying to the aliens more than I did before.
I've played the first disc more often than the other discs. It is pretty awesome, but my favorite is disc 3. Sometimes though, I'm just too lazy to get all the way up there.
Yes, the first disc is good... But personally, my favourite is the 3rd or 4th disc I think... I love Ultimecias Castle, and fighting all the bosses in there.
But it's all good, because to me this is the best final fantasy ever.
3rd and 4th are also my favorite but I like them all.
