Eh? What? It's intentionally retro. Thank goodness. I'm giddy to be playing a brand new 16 bit (32?) era game again.
It could have been retro without being ugly. It looks like Final Fantasy IV. It should look like Final Fantasy VI or Chrono Trigger.
