I've never had fleas before. Our pets were always indoor pets, plus the fact that my family is neurotically clean to the point of possible OCD. I'm kind of scared of the idea of fleas.

We've never had trouble getting rid of fleas. Just chemwarfare the cats and the fleas will be dead and gone real soon. Unless you're Miriel and live somewhere where fleas are apparently immune to such things or smart enough not to bite poisoned cats.
This year was the first year we have had a problem with them. I swear they are like super fleas! Like Miriel, we had to flea bomb, steam clean the carpets, powders, all that stuff! It was so hard to get rid of them! Horrible time. HORRIBLE.
It's not a matter of opinion, flea eggs are incredibly hard to kill. It's just a fact: Flea Egg: Control, Description of Flea Eggs
They're immune to a lot of traditional ways of getting rid adult fleas. There's no known chemical that can penetrate a flea egg's cocoon. You can get rid of live fleas easily enough. Simply vacating a place for a week can kill them. But if you REALLY want to get rid of fleas completely, you have to kill all the lives ones, then wait for the eggs to hatch and get rid of THOSE before they have a chance to lay eggs of their own.
Y'all don't even know the amount of flea research I've done. Read freakin' books about it. Know thy enemy.
Also, using pets as a poison dispenser wasn't an option for us. It's not like we could spray frontline on ourselves and wait for the fleas to hatch, develop into adults, bite us, and die.
