Sweaty Muscular Men on Romance Novels

So I was grocery shopping in Giant Eagle last night and I was walking past where all the books are and there was a big turny rack thing with all the cheap paperback romance novels on it, and I noticed...nine out of every ten of them had pictures of a shirtless sweaty muscular dude on them. Some of them almost looked pornographic even.

I don't understand...is this a ploy to market toward women? Does it work? Why are there random sweaty muscular men on the front of romance novels?

Seriously, this is my biggest question in life right now. Tell me.

Yeah, (in general) women are just as shallow as men when it comes to marketing, they just don't like to admit it. Probably 'cause women who don't fall for that harlequin sexualization soap-opera bull-droppings are ashamed of their kin for being so ........ I'll think of the word I want later. Overly muscular guys (especially sweaty or oily looking ones) look hideous to me, which is probably why I've never gone out of my way to read this sort of novel.

The only women I ever see reading them are lonely spinsters or women whose hubbies cba to toss them a sex every now and then. It's marketed toward women who think there is actually a chance that that book's lead female was written with them in mind and that a handsome, beefy, sweaty logger wants to mate with them.

What's funny is that they prevent people from buying them. Romance novels are huge on the iPad because now people can read them in public without people knowing they're reading them in public!
