Yes, the free trial period has been extended indefinitely until further notice. I assume that the free trial will end once the game has reached a significant level of development like a major version update or the release of the console version, as the costs of development and server maintenance need to be made up sooner rather than later for Square Enix.

It's supposed to be free because it's supposedly unenjoyable, actually. xD But yeah, that's basically how I see it. I'll probably continue to log in once or twice a month and level up a bit, which should hopefully mean that when it's good and goes live on PS3 I can pay, hop on and help everyone with gear etc. for a decent period of time. I think I have something like five classes at rank 18-19 now...
