I knew tonight's episode would be entirely focused on the wall once I saw the opening credits and there were only 5 actors in the cast before the names of the crew started rolling. I love that about this show. The opening credits are specifically relevant to every episode.

I couldn't believe I was actually cheering for Alliser this episode. Up until this point he's just been a trout head. But that's the beauty of Game of Thrones I suppose is being able to see that there are sides to everyone that you'll like and dislike.

I had the same thought as you Psy, that kid shot Ygritte and he was like

I thought for sure that Sam was going to bite the dust in this episode. I heard the bell toll when he said "I promise I'm not going to die". That's usually a bad sign for this show.

I wonder what will happen to that guy that was hiding with Gilly? I imagine there's gotta be some sort of punishment for cowards in the Night's Watch.

Does anyone who's read the book remember if wildlings actually did so much raiding south of the wall? I might be misremembering but I thought they were meant to keep a low profile so they could surprise attack them from both sides when Mance Rider ordered the first attack. I definitely dont remember the Thenns being there and I dislike how it takes away any moral ambiguity and just turns the fight into good vs evil. Good episode though, loved the long panning shot of the fight.

I was hoping someone more consequential and dramatic would kill Ygritte like Alisser or Sam. Or Gilly if we want maximum irony

I don't think they ever revealed who killed Ygritte in the books, did they? Or am I wrong? That whole scene was such a stereotypical Hollywood esque ending.

If I remember correctly, Jon checks the arrow after and determines it wasn't one of his own (there was no *staring at each other with love and dread*, he just finds her after the battle), and that's as much as we know. That scene was definitely groanworthy. Other than that, good episode!

They don't seem afraid to kill off characters that are still alive in the books. I count at least two more this episode ((SPOILER)Pyp and Grenn). I suppose they've likely made sure they don't have super important roles beforehand, though.

The large man was pretty giant, old friend! True words from a truer person.

It was cool to focus the whole episode on one particular section of the story, although that did mean Daenerys wasn't included at all but it has happened before and I survived that time. I guess I can once more.
Sam definitely came into his own, and he got some lady action too, nice. If someone murders him I'll be pretty unhappy. I think Sam should win the game of thrones.

I do think for a penultimate episode they could have covered the whole battle...rather than just the lead up. I guess it may have seemed rushed if they did but I don't know, unless they are going to leave the situation at the wall until next season, I feel like it might be a drain on the finale especially since they've had a whole episode to themselves. There's a lot of other ting going on!

Actually, I'll be most upset if Ghost died. I can't be having no more animals dying in no more Game Of Thrones!

Loved this episode. I noticed when baldie smashed Jon's head into the anvil, Jon smashed his head right back with a hammer.

Allister smurfing throne, wow. "With me! With me!!!!"
When that giant charged!? "There are no gods in this tunnel."
I was aware of how smurfing awesome this episode was as I watched which brought it to a new height of intensity.

Basically, had a smurfing intense raging boner the whole episode. That's my official review.

Pyp got one shot off and died but Grenn? Grenn was awesome. He knew full well when Jon told him to hold the gate that he'd probably die. He knew full well when the giant was charging that he would probably die. Jon wasn't his commander. Jon was his friend. And he was loyal to his friend and to the nights watch. And he rallied his men and killed the giant.

Grenn was a beast and I am sad.
