The difference is that the scene in the book happened after the battle while in the show it was during it. That's the only problem I had with it. The 'you know nothing' as her last line...come on you knew that had to happen!

Yeah, I think that's a fair criticism. Although, and I'll have to watch that scene again to confirm this, aren't they behind some sort of structure while this is happening? I seem to remember there being a building or something similar in between them and the bulk of the fighting.
It's two people together sharing a still and quiet moment as chaos rages all around them don't you see it's a metaphor for love - and indeed specifically their love? It's the god damn cave. Honestly now!

i love it how they dont imediatly jump back to Kings landing but instead offer us a different part of the realm so we can all overthink that moment for another week

The fighting was epic. I thought it was weird that they decided to focus on one thing, especially because this now means they have to cram in several things for the finale, but they'll manage to do it in an hour. The finale is always a little bit longer anyway. The only thing I didn't like about the episode is what other people mentioned -- Jon Snow stopping in the middle of a friggin' battle to hold Ygritte and be very melodramatic. This episode is infinitely more enjoyable when you have surround sound or really good headphones. Give an Emmy to whoever did the sound goddamn.
The reason this episode cost so much: the wall.

Yeah, while I didn't care for this episode (not because it was bad, just not my particular favorite sort of thing regardless of what show/movie it is) the music was AWESOME. I actually noted to Denmark while we were watching it that it sounded completely different from any music in the rest of the series, and I really appreciated that.
Come on guys the man thought he was about to be killed by the only woman he has ever loved or bedded and then out of the blue she gets shot. He's going to take a minute. Sam held Pyp while he was dying and nobody's bitching about that!
Grenn held the gate when he was dying![]()
GRRM makes his living giving us what we don't expect and knocking cliches, give him this one you bastards![]()
I wasn't really too bothered about it. The only bad guy firing arrows at that point was Ygri-- oh wait. And the rest of the soldiers were in the midst of battle and I believe at that point the Watch were winning, so it's not like he was going to get killed all of a sudden. Sure, they played it out better in the books, but it wouldn't have made for great TV. "Oh by the way someone shot Ygritte we don't even know who." ALTHOUGH APPARENTLY IT'S OKAY FOR GRENN DESPITE HIM SURVIVING IN THE BOOKS.
Poor kid is probably somewhere between confused and mortified. The first time in his life he kills someone and the Knight of the Watch he expected thanks from went over to the dying 'enemy' and cuddled her in despair.
I'm thinking it more and more likely that they will just save some of the next big happenings for next season. It's not like they didn't kill Joffrey at the start of this one, so major events right at the start won't be anything new.
Bow before the mighty Javoo!
