*Ygritte sees Jon*
Ygritte: SMURF YOU JON SNOW! I HATE YOU!
*Ygritte shoots arrow that just barely misses*
Jon: NO! YGRITTE! STOP!
*Ygritte charges him with a knife screaming, a battle cry, hatred in her eyes. Jon is paralyzed, he doesn't want to fight her, it's heartbreaking and terrible.*
*Suddenly Ygritte is shot in the back at the last second*
Ygritte: UGH! AAAAAAAAAA! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGHRJKVBLBBLBLBLBLBBBLLLLBBBLLLL
*Ygritte spins and clutches at her back ineffectively. Blood spills everywhere.*
Jon: YGRITTE! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
*Jon runs to her and tries to help. With her last strength Ygritte shoves him off and glares at him, unable to speak, struggling to breathe, kicking her feet in the dirt in a futile effort to get away or do anything. She dies with her angry eyes fixed on Jon.*
Jon: Ygritte! Ygritte...

"...And then!!! Out of nowhere, comes
a random wildling, charging at Jon from
behind and just smashes his head with
a freaking axe while going all: 'DIE CROW!
KILL ALL THE CROWS! GWAHAHA! Bwaha!!!"
"...no, Bern. I think you are the only one
who would have appreciated that outcome."

I didn't really like how they dealt with Grenn. It was like Jon forgot about the gate and Grenn having to hold it. You'd think he'd have rushed in there at some point. It's like we're missing some information in the show, like someone already came and told Jon that the gate held but everyone died or something. Jon stopping to look at the dead bodies and saying "he held the gate" took away from the moment instead of adding to it.

It's a recurring theme... someone saves the day, someone does something heroic or good, and no one will ever know. It's the story of Tyrion saving King's Landing. It's the story of Varys. (Maybe? Who can tell?) It's the story of the Hound saving Sansa. It's the story of Jaime and Brienne. It's the story of Sam and Gilly. It's the story of the whole Night's Watch. Ignored by everyone in the kingdom, a great big bunch of them just died, and meanwhile back in King's Landing, their requests for troops and basic aid are laughed at. It's one of the most tragic parts of the story.

It's almost a litmus test. Does a character want fame, glory, power, recognition? They're probably either evil or tragically stupid. Good deeds are quiet and small and affect a few people (and maybe the reader/viewer). Bad deeds are the ones everyone pays attention to. How often does someone in GoT benefit in a big way from a good deed? From an act of honesty or bravery or loyalty? Can anyone think of an example?

Part of me hopes the end of the series is everyone bickering over the Iron Throne, and then out of nowhere the whole nation is overrun by unkillable ice zombies.

I think the closest we have so far of honourable intentions being rewarded with recorded victories is Dany. Robb was obviously doing well for a while, but then stuff happened. Beyond that? Nah, can't think of any major honourable intentions being given the thumbs up by the rest of the world.
