Yeah, never play it on a laptop, it sucks big time.
If you a game that's easy to mod though I'd call with either Wolf 3D or GTKRadiant for games like Jedi Outcast/ Academy, and Quake. I've made a few GTKRadiant maps. I started a yoda hut, a while back but never finished it.
I also used it as a modeling program for back grounds to a adventure gaming project I started. Heck, even making terrain is easy in GTKRadiant, even is adding ambient sound. I'd go with that program. Just as easy is Wolf 3D modding programs.
Doom, I haven't modded in it yet but I think it's more about math than it is just simple placement of shapes, 3d models like Radiant is and which takes care of all the math for you.
