I've never understood how Jack became short for John. There's at least a few things wrong with that.

Well to be fair, John is short for Johnathan.

Actually, I think Jonathan is long for John.

I guess it's the same thing with William being shorted to Bill, instead of Will.

William -> Will -> Bill
Richard -> Rick -> Dick

Actually I watched this weird like "the origins of words" thing once upon a time and it was about the origin of paddock or some . ANYWAY they mentioned that IN YE OLDE TIMES the Rs and Ds were basically the same hence Rick -> Dick. But take this at face value, I was probably drunk outta my mind.
