Continent for Australia, and they were indeed shipped there - or at least, some of them were. People went to NZ of their own accord, lured by the promise of a new paradise that had been found down that way. When they arrived, they faced hostile (sometimes cannibal) tribes and lived in crappy makeshift buildings on muddy ground. Hello, Auckland! Of course, time changes everything and now it's probably a lot closer to the paradise they were promised, but going by the letters they wrote to their families in the UK which we had to study at school, they probably won't take much consolation out of that.
Dunno how the Aussies fared - the Aboriginals were pretty different to the Maori.
