I'm really struggling with the Merton reference unless its an anagram or something.

Merton is an anagram of mentor. Cloud's mentor I suppose would be Zack. Is it Zack's death scene at the top of that hill from which you can see an expansive vista? However, Cloud can only see the death of his friend and mentor.
