None right so far, so I'll give a hint.
Hint1: This riddle refers to a battle. I won't tell you how it refers to a battle, however.
The only battles that spring to mind are the fight with the Materia Keeper in the Nibelheim Mountains or the battle with Red Dragon at the Temple of the Ancients?
Well, you are closer. To give a fairly large hint...
Hint2: The Materia Keeper is the "protector, the entrusted one"

The Materia Keeper is not in the Kalm Flashback, so it's past what Cloud is familiar with. This makes me think that the answer lies somewhere within the flashback, or at least related to it.
But you are familiar as well.

The only "guard" I could think of is Lost Number but I don't think that's it.

Is it the dragon in the flashback that would one hit Cloud? I don;t think that has actually been a guess and Dak did mention it and you said he was so close you could almost give it to him. Also if it is right Dak can totally have the riddle!
Yes Melissaur, it is!... kinda. It's the same enemy, but it's referencing fighting the enemy again in Mt Nibel.

This references the flashback, saying that the events of the flashback are familiar to Cloud. "Past" what he can call familiar, means that it is beyond the area of the flashback, meaning the room with the tubes and the Materia Keeper, which isn't in the flashback. Really, these 2 lines are just to allow you to think of the area, which is Mt. Nibel.

This references the fact that, traditionally, dragons will guard a large pile of gold, and also a reference to what you can steal from the dragon, a Gold Armlet.
