I saw the thread title and wondered "wtf why does Peegee need help with India Pale Ale?"

The difference between 'ice' and 'eyes' for me is the S sound. 'Ice' has a long, kind of sibilant hiss. 'Eyes' has a distinctly z-like sound. Or to put it differently, the end of 'eyes' is like the start of 'zoo', whereas the end of 'ice' is like the start of 'circle'.

The diphthong is the same. As in /aɪ/. The difference lies in the consonant - "ice" has a voiceless /s/, while "eyes" has a voiced /z/ at the end.

Eyes is /aIz/ (yeah I'm gonna use x-sampa) but you could argue it as /aI:z/ as vowels get semi-lengthened before voiced consonants.

And one more thing. It's hard to note where exactly the vowel would be prolonged, since diphthongs are treated as one sound, that is a sort of blend of two vowels. So you can't just prolong the /ɪ/, then it would be like /ə'iːz/, and I doubt anyone pronounces "eyes" that was.

Can't really say. I don't speak Dutch I know they're all long in English.
