Like I said earlier, don't try to learn Japanese from anime. Anime is not real and if you try to talk like that you'll sound awkward, especially if you're a gaijin. (Imagine someone learning English by watching Jersey Shore. Yeah, not a good idea.) Standard Japanese is what you need to learn. Once you've got that, then you can watch anime for entertainment.
Don't listen to Peegee he's an idiot.
Amazon.com: Japanese Vocabulary (Barron's Vocabulary) (9780764139734): Carol Akiyama, Nobuo Akiyama: Books I study with this book. It's increased my vocabulary by leaps and bounds.
Amazon.com: Japanese Kanji & Kana Revised Edition: A Guide to the Japanese Writing System (Tuttle Language Library) (0676251820775): Wolfgang Hadamitzky, Mark Spahn: Books I study Kanji from this book. Don't start Kanji until you have mastered hiragana and katakana. Some people like to just jump in but you really need to pace yourself.
Go meet Japanese people and talk to them. Even if you're new at it they'll tell you your Japanese is sugoi and love you.
You could use it yeah. There are greetings in it and all the words are sorted by category. And it's a cheap book.
There's an online site like Rosetta Stone, it's called Livemocha
You can also find an international buddy online to help you along at http://www.interpals.net
This is a nice little website for English and Spanish speakers trying to learn the other language. The boards are a tad dead, but there are a lot of nifty things like a giant collection of idioms.

My brother is still studying japanese. He told me the other day he's studying the word 'desu'
I wish i were spamming but it's the truth. You can either spend your time studying the practical and societal definition of words or you can just learn how to speak the language.
A few months ago I met my brother's gf's cousin who barely spoke a word of english. Now we can converse properly. She learned conversational english instead of figuring out concepts like figure of speech and idioms, which aren't necessary for conversation in a foreign language.
For example you're studying french justy - does it help you at all that there's a speech method where the syllables are reversed?
