Default I want to learn a new language

hey guy's. So for a while now I've been thinking about learning a new language. The only problem is i don't no what way to go about it and would rather spend no money at all.

I've always wanted to try and learn Spanish and Japanese. Any one no of any good programs or sites that teach? many thanks.

You will never get good in any language unless you get out and use it practically. You can study as hard as and for as long as you want, but until you use it you won't reach your goals.

THAT BEING SAID I am a Japanese language major and I use Japanese every day at work.

I disagree with pg. Don't learn Anime Japanese. Learn standard Japanese first. Then when you have a good grasp you can pick it up from anime.

Get dropped off somewhere in Mexico. You'll come back knowing enough Spanish to get by or you'll get sold as taco meat.

I took a couple of years of Spanish in high school and then a couple of years of Japanese in college. Spanish is approximately nineteen thousand thirty two hundred and twentyfive times easier to learn. Trufax.

So if you're trying to decide which of the two languages to do, I'd go with how much time and effort you are willing to put in.

omg pike that is like the best article ever.

I've met so many weeaboo smurfs at my school who just study Japanese because they like anime or something stupid like that. They learn their Japanese from anime and they sound and act like idiots because of it. I want to hit them.

    Ahaha seriously

I took a few different Japanese classes for a time in college, just to branch out and see if it was maybe something I wanted to minor in. So aside from the language courses I took a Japanese History course, a Japanese literature course, and "Japanese Film and Anime", which attracted a rather interesting group of students

    ACTUAL STORY FROM THAT CLASS:

*Teacher discussing old Japanese films by Kurosawa or something*
Student: "I think there are Japanese video games that are just as artistic as these old movies."
Teacher: "Oh, give me an example?"
    Student: "FINAL FANTASY SEVEN"

Yeah, it's a kajillion billion times easier to learn Spanish than it is to learn Japanese when English is your first language.

Spanish and Japanese are two languages I want to learn as well. Japanese just because 90% of my entertainment is from Japan (so yeah, call me a weeaboo I guess xD) and Spanish because I have practical use for it, seeing as I'll be living in South Texas. Looks good on a resume, even if you just wanna be a cashier!

Yeah, I really wish I knew Spanish, it would make it about ten times easier for me to get a job.

I currently live in the middle of nowhere in Northwestern Washington (couple hours away from Seattle); you'd think it wouldn't be a mecca for Spanish speakers, but oh my word, it is. You can walk into pretty much any place that is hiring and if you're bilingual you've got a job. I'm jelly. :<

Learn Esperanto ('cause it's easy 8D)

But seriously, whatever you do, DON'T use Rosetta Stone. It's based on a terrible theory (adults should not try and learn a language the way a child does) and it's insultingly overpriced.

Im really interested in learning Japanese. If you have any other good references such as books that I could purchase weather they be plain text or workbooks, I'd really appreciate it. Did you think that watching anime can help you learn also?
