Final Fantasy XIII-2's New Trailer Brings the Long Swords to E3 2011

game definitely looks interesting. Seems like the concept is the characters from the first that save everyone/everything are forgotten or whatever, and it follows Serah, the only one that knows the truth. The battles look like they have expanded upon 13 battles, I definitely saw a monster fighting with them.

Here's also gameplay footage from the demo against a boss called Atlas:

    E3 2011: Final Fantasy XIII-2 Demo Atlas Boss Battle Footage | FinalFantasy-XIII.net

The game truly looks like an XIII-2. Little seems to have changed. I'm not even sure how Serah can use magic. Is she a l'Cie again? Or can you forever use magic once you've bee na l'Cie? Lightning is dead? Wut? Why did I see NORA again in the trailer, protecting Serah and all, but no Snow, who spend the entire last game ending every sentence with "SERAH!"?

Being able to choose your dialog seems very western-RPG-ish to me, but I won't condemn it, I just don't care either way. I do like there are moogles in the game again, however. I just wish the design was different. Mog-clock and QTE's all seem pretty standard additions to the battle system, making it even more action-ish than RPG-ish. Don't really care either way. There are a couple of screenshots released showing the map of one of the game's dungeons. I wonder what other people think of it. My memory of XIII is already starting to fade, so maybe someone else could tell me if it looks linear or not?

    E3 2011: Final Fantasy XIII-2 Demo Shots – Dialog choices | FinalFantasy-XIII.net

I do like the concept of Atlas, having to fight him part by part. Reminds me of the final battle against Kefka, one of VI's better moments. I also like Serah's new clothes, and what's up with her weapon? It's a bow, but sometimes you see her hold it like a sword. What's this? After the gunblade, the bowblade? O.o

In short, the trailer and demo footage manage to get you all excited and hyped. The problem is XIII's trailer and demo footage did the same, and in the end, that just turned out to be an average game (for me). It remains to be seen how XIII-2 will turn out. We'll probably know by the end of the year.

That dialogue was pretty derp, and this is the first time I've been worried. The story was my favorite thing about FFXIII, I hope it's not dumb now

Well, what kind of precedent have they set with sequel stories?

    FFX-2 - Story was dumb
FFVII AC - Never saw it. Was it dumb?
FFVII DoC - This whole game was dumb.
FFIV The After Years - Never finished it but the story was kind of boring.

So that is why I was hoping for an emphasis on game play and adventure, similar to the treatment X-2 got.

I'll have to remember to view these trailers when I get home. I hope my internet works again.

I think most people will be happy as long as there are towns and exploration. The new characters are exciting and the premises sounds interesting. I am glad the battle system is the same + improvements because many people, including myself, loved the battle system. It seems that everyone agrees with the lack of exploration, interactivity, and linearity was a major flaw in FF13, but the battle system and story have both people who love it and hate it (like FF12). The battle system was received well by the professional critics, so it doesn't surprise me that they kept it. The only worry I have is that Noel and Serah may be the only controllable characters for a good portion of the game... I appreciated the fact that FF13 had some older characters, as I am an aging FF fan, soon to be 25 myself and would rather relate to an older sister (Lightning) or a parent (Sazh), or someone in an adult romantic relationship (Snow... although I guess Serah is too, but she is like the fresh 18 year old marrying the older guy, bleh)
    Lamia's Tiara- Headgear in FFIX
Lamia's Flute- Weapon for Eiko in FFIX
    Lamia in FFV- a enemy
appearance: a lady with long brown hair, wearing a tiara...half woman and half snake.
    Lamia in FF3j- A Harp
    Lamia in FFL2- An enemy
FF2j Queen Lamia, at one point she even gets Frionel in a bedroom with her and jumps on the bed and says "take me!".. before she turns into her snakey self. She serves as a mini boss in this game (as Queen Lamia).. and after you fight her as a mini boss, regular lamia's become random foes and later on in the game, Queen Lamia's become random foes as well.
LamiaScl. an item that paralyzes foes.
According to legend, she was once a Libyan queen (or princess) who fell in love with Zeus. Zeus' jealous wife Hera deformed her into a monster and murdered their offspring. She also made Lamia unable to close her eyes, so that she couldn't find any rest from the obsessing image of her dead children. When Zeus saw what had be done to Lamia, he felt pity for her and gave his former lover a gift: she could remove her eyes, and then put them on again. This way, though sleepless, she could rest from her misfortune. Lamia envied other the other mothers and took her vengeance by stealing their children and devouring them.

Square loves their teenage boys don't they? It's been like that since VIII.

    Oh god, mid battle QTEs

    Oh god, KH2 battle mechanics

    Oh god, lost memories

Oh god, I'm still excited about it.

The only thing that seems a tad disappointing so far is that the battle system looks pretty much exactly the same. They seem to have added a few minor changes but it's the same core system. I wouldn't mind really if this wasn't an FF game...SE has spoiled me throughout the years by giving me a totally new system with each installment.

I have a feeling this is going to feel a lot more like an expansion pack/DLC than a true sequel. But you know what? I'm cool with that. At least every enemy and environment you see isn't recycled, like they were in X-2. Also, MOOGLES.

Also, I thought the game was about Lightning? This trailer sure makes it look like Serah is the main character.

They're probably doing what they did with FF13, and splitting the story up between different groups of characters. Remember how for a lot of 13, you might play as Lightning/Hope for a chunk of the story, then switch to Vanille/Sahz for another chunk?

Ah, true, I didn't think about that.

They must not have the Lightning/Purple Haired Guy portions quite ready yet.

Battle system pretty much looks the same yeah. I was hoping they would make something less automated for this game, but it looks like a "mash the x button" type of thing.

If only they could spend the effort they spend on graphics on making some great gameplay instead

The new guy (NORA?) seems annoying already and that worries me. I hope they are able to keep the game with the same serious overtones to it because I dislike the more "happy" styled gameplay you find in FFX, KH, etc. I'll stay open-minded though and will probably get the game because I love the mythology so much. But if they've cut out all the previous characters such as Snow and Sahz and made them into bit-part characters, I'll be fairly annoyed. Sahz and Vanille were my favourite characters in the first game and Light was one of the lesser characters for me. Snow was cool. Serah was meh. So basically they're focusing on the characters I didn't like while the characters I really enjoyed are not even shown. =| Hmmm.

I doubt Sazh will be playable or have a big role. His storyline was pretty self-contained. Snow either, though he is married to Serah so he must have some part to play.

You thought X was happy? You must have hated X-2 then. One of the worst parts of FFXIII was that it took itself too seriously. FF games need a level of whimsy. It's a game where characters have magical powers. They should have some fun with it. Gilgamesh and Ultros are some of the best characters of all time because they weren't taken too seriously.

I didn't like FFX so I never played FFX-2. And there's a difference between the likes of Gilgamesh/Ultros and (shudder) Tidus. Firstly, they are fun bits on the side, not the main storyline. Secondly, they were funny rather than annoying. The main story of FFVI was pretty serious, really, but there were still light-hearted one liners and silly things on the side. FFVII was the same (Don Corneo), as was FFVIII (Biggs & Wedge) and I think FFXIII was fine for it, too. Some of the comments made in FFXIII were great. But unlike old school games, it's pretty difficult to get unrealistic funny things mixed into HD games. So they make them slightly more realistic instead. Sahz and Snow had some pretty funny moments in XIII, and Frocobo was great fun. I think they could have expanded on the sheep thing to make a pretty good silly sidequest but I guess they never found time to make that little minigame have any point. No stupid-beyond-stupid enemy, but on the flipside, at least there were no annoying-beyond-annoying characters.

So yeah, if it was a trade-off between X and XIII, I'd go for XIII's more subtle and realistic humour to Tidus' annoying HA HA HA HA scene every day. I'm sure they can find a better balance, but I never thought that the more serious tones of XIII were a bad point. People had been calling for a more serious, darker FF for a long time, and XIII delivered just that.

It would definitely be cool to see characters practicing their new magic arts, though. FF games never see characters doing that (that I can remember). It should be something similar to that of what we see in Heroes and X-Men, with people learning to control their new powers and strengthening based on that control.

Well the voice acting in X was horrendous, Tidus especially. I think if the games were made in reverse order, or if X had no voices, you may have liked it better. It really is a great game without the voice acting.

I like FFX, its one of my favourite FF games and it's story is pretty serious.... Well somewhat serious. Its pretty much Yuna going on a pilgramage to commit suicide, thats pretty serious. And I found Jecht's scenes to to be the lighter side of the story. Rikku has some comical moments as well.

Anyway, by the looks of things, they've made the maps much more open this time around. For me, that was the only real problem with the game. I found the battle system and story really enjoyable.
