weekly/monthly photography contest?

Another forum I'm on has a photograph competition thread. Basically a subject matter is named. All interested parties have a time frame of around 5 days to get a picture in. After five days no more entries are accepted and 2 or 3 days are used for everyone to vote for their favorite picture.

The winner is announced. Then that person gloats, and chooses another subject matter.

The rules on photo manipulation are pretty open. It's fair game to uses whatever programs you like to alter the image how you like. The only hard and fast rules are that it is a picture you took yourself, worked with by yourself, and it was taken THAT WEEK specifically for the contest.

I'm seeing if anyone is interested in something like that in this forum. I'm not a big photographer, but I enjoy seeing the pictures and voting.

It sounds like a nice idea. It would technically go in the Artist Forum, though I hope it would draw traffic there rather than get ignored. I would participate if it were monthly; weekly seems like a bit much. We may also be able to promote it each time via the announcements and/or Twitter.

I agree about the contest needing to go in the artist forum, but like a few other folks said, they would have never seen this idea thread if I posted in there. I just thought it might be a good way of getting more photography traffic in the arts section of the forum.

A monthly thing might be a better. Perhaps 2 weeks of photo submittals. 10 days of voting, and the rest of the month for the winner to decide the new subject. Then the new subject is announced at the very end of the old month to kick off the new month.

Well if enough people are interested, I'll kick it off at the beginning of the month and tell everyone what the first subject is. I think at least 5 interested people and photos are needed to keep this thing alive. We'll see how it goes.

On a side note, it might be an idea if the Photo's were posted via PM and the person making the game would post them here, so it would be anonymous and no one would vote for someone because they like the person and not the photo ^^

Of course after the result is in it could be revealed then who took which photo.

I like taking photos, but I never do, giving me a target could be fun, and I'll actually visit the Artist forum then!

If people are already concerned about anonymity to keep the contest fair, that's sad. Let's try not make it a popularity contest, eh?

I'm willing to go to the extra trouble of having folks PM me their photo and then post then anonymously. That might help keep the casual observer from voting for a friend, but that won't stop people from PM'ing their friends and telling them which photo is theirs and which one to vote for, etc.

So it will still be at least partially based on the honor system. Just like we're taking them at their word that the photo was taken by them, adjusted only by them, and taken specifically for the contest in that 2 week period. People can cheat, we just ask them not to. It's a silly little contest for fun, anyway.

I'm glad there's so many interested photographers, 'cause I ain't one of 'em! I'm here to see pretty pictures, and I guess run the thread. I only have a film camera.
