Bartz, Cloud and Lightning probably top my list. But Cloud easily 1st, Lightning easily 2nd. I just don't like many protagonists, I guess. But then, I've yet to play all the way through FFIII, FFIV, FFVI and FFIX, so perhaps my mind will change for them.

Oh, and Loony Bob, protagonist of FFXIV, and Loonybob, protagonist of FFXI, are both really cool.

Ramza is easily my favorite, followed by Terra, Cecil, and Squall.

Cloud and Lightning are my #2 & #3
The only ones I really dislike are Tidus and end of FF8 Squall. If I could have kept Squall as he was at the beginning of the game he probably would have been one of my favorites.

Tidus was just awful to me.

He was selfish, whiny, and downright stupid in the beginning. And to see him suddenly become so "mature" towards the end just made him seem self-righteous and entitled to me.

Besides, Yuna's the real main character.

I love tidus so much, he's like everything I want in a protagonist. I mean the laughing scene totally didn't make me cringe and hope for death as a savior. I totally didn't want to punch tidus in the gut for the majority of the game.

I would hate on Tidus more if Yuna wasn't such an awful character, by being next to him, she makes him appear better than he really is. Then, a version of me from a parallel dimension came to me the other day, in his world, FFX didn't have Yuna so it sucked a little less than usual but he explained to me that Tidus is pretty awful as well for being a a crybaby cause his dad didn't hug him enough as a child and his big secret was that's he's a dead dude's dream, who is tasked o stop a monster who is his dad who is also part of some dead dudes' dream. Seriously, how can anyone take FFX's plot seriously? Just saying the last couple of sentences makes me feel embarrassed, and chuckle at how absolutely ridiculous the plot of this game is... Anyway, this alternate Onnak Flow set me straight about Tidus being just as awful as Yuna.

Lightning just felt fake to me, like she spent the entire game trying too hard to fill some kind of obligatory badass quota she borrowed from a DMC game (not realizing most of DMC's badass moments are really played for laughs) and beyond that, she's just a less sympathetic version of Squall who tries too hard to be macho.

Cloud, well my issue is that I like the mercenary Cloud that you play in the Midgard section, once Sephy enters the picture Cloud basically becomes a Cecil knockoff, which basically makes him neutral in my book. Then his big revelation is that he's a whiny wimp with self confidence issues? It just killed the cool factor for him, I like watching my characters grow stronger in spirit, not have the big reveal having him become the type of character where most other games start from. Cloud's true past just killed the character for me, in both its poor execution and its awful results, I trounced through 60+ hours so my badass hero can become Kid Ryu from BoFIII, thanks for wasting my time Square. The Compilation hasn't helped him much either.
