iliketrains. They're not my favourite band, but I'm pretty sure people haven't heard of them! They're post-rock, and sing about interesting things like chess and polar expeditions.

They classify themselves as humorcore.....basically metal with a sense of humor. I seriously don't know anyone that hates them after listening to their music. CHECK THEM OUT.

TV On The Radio is actually a generally well-reviewed band. They're not for everyone, but if you like rock music but hate bands that are getting boners due to their own Indie-ness/Metal-ness/Prog-ness, check them out!

City and Colour - Just a dude and his guitar. This is a good one as well. I suppose the genre would be folk rock, or indie or something. I dunno what you kids are listening to nowadays.
Fair to Midland. Again, not that unknown, but worth listening to if you haven't yet. I've only listened to Arrows & Anchors so I don't know about quality of their other albums.
