Default Crono Trigger coming to PSN next Tuesday, plus possible Chrono Cross!

Charles McCarter // Product Manager, Square Enix just announced that CT would be coming out as a PSone classic on the PSN (compatible with PSP/PS3).

If this is the PSX version (as it most certainly will be) does anyone know if the CD load times will carry over onto the emulated version? There is no physical reason they should, but sometimes ports do stupid things. (Obviously no one knows, I am asking based on precedent)

I already have it on the DS, so its not that big of a deal for me.

Im not 100% about CT (it not being released yet obviously), but I'm pretty sure just the fact that the PSone titles aren't read from discs helps load times. Sony does go in and alter things though, they've had posts about that process before so they might do it. When a third party publisher re-releases a PSone title it's really in their ballpark when it comes to what they want to do with it. RE 1-3 seem to run better, although I played them as kid on my PS1 so I might not be the best person to ask. FFVII ran pretty smooth as well. The PSone Japan Imports are pretty bad though.

I am not interested in Chrono Trigger because I already have the best version (Nintendo DS), but I'm extremely interested in Chrono Cross. Whilst I imported it many years ago, I don't have any console capable of running it anymore as my PS2 is not modded.

I really hope they release it in EU/AUS areas for PSN.

There's also an option in the emulator for faster load times, but as you suggested, it's really in the developers' ball park to take advantage of it or not. Playing FFVIII, which had moderately noticeable load times, I don't think it's any faster. The real test will be with something like FFVI, which was really bad, but I'm not familiar with Chrono Trigger. Can anyone shed some light on if they were bad or not?

I'd love for Cross to get there as its something I want to check out eventually. Not right now, but it's good to know it's there.

CT port on PS1 is even worse than FFVI Anthology. Imagine a 2-5 second delay on everything when a battle is started, just a few lingering seconds with no sound or movement on the screen for every battle. It also had issues loading the menu screen and the load times for the new cutscenes was very noticeable. It made the PS1 port of VI look like the SNES version. It would be pretty bad if SE doesn't address these issues when they finally release on PSN.

Chrono Trigger is epic! I completed it on PS1 many times, the loading times didn't really bother me since I haven't played the Nintendo versions before. I guess it depends on the person who plays it. Chrono Cross on the other hand was really frustrating to play on console, my PS1 laser just isn't the same like it used to be before, so the game quite often froze. But now I have fixed the problem by putting the console to stand on the controller ports.

I think I'm good since I already own this on PS1, but on the other hand will me buying it help it get a sequel?

Great game, but I've already played it so many times that it's not really a "must own" thing for me.

They've said as much, but I don't believe them.

I had no idea it was this bad. I was considering picking it up as my cooldown game for Dark Souls, but if it's this much worse than the FFA ports then forget it. I guess the DS version is the way to go for playing CT on a modern platform, I guess.

Damn, that's pretty bad... I'll have to wait for confirmation to see if SE utilized the faster load feature... Either way, CT's not really one of my top RPGs so it'll just be good to know it's there and waiting for only a few dollars if I ever get the craving.

I don't know, they tend to charge a bit for these games. At least over here in Australia they charge anywhere from $15-20 per PS1 game. Can just get the DS version for that price, and get an overall better experience.
