That's creative licensing for you! The problem with the comic book is it couldn't expand as well on a character as the show can. You can actually see their emotions change in real time. You have a panel for each in the book. So they took some liberties to expand on some characters and change the story around that. I think it works, and just like any show/movie that's translated from something else, you have to remember that while they have same title and same characters and same settings, they are two completely different things.
