She's rocking a full set of Dragonplate, including the shield. I've already accepted that she's stuck carrying the steel equipment she started with.
To answer both of you, it's version 1.0something. I haven't updated it at all since I began playing, so maybe I'll just try that and see if it helps.
EDIT: I'm playing on 360.

I had a bunch of thugs show up for no reason and wordlessly follow me around for about two days. Then I went to Whiterun and they decided to gang up on me or something. So they died. Yeah it was odd.
Guys I really want to roll an alt![]()
I don't know how much longer I can fight this urge
Working on the "1000 bounty in all nine holds" trophy for the PS3, I ran into a father and son in Winterhold. After unleashing an Inferno fireball point-blank into the father's face, killing him in one hit, the son is awestruck with me and asks me if I can teach him magic. I like to believe that I solved some domestic violence issues at home that day.
So I've run across a problem. I've had Lydia as my companion and I've been making her carry all my dungeon loot because she's built like an ox apparently. :P Anyway, so here's the problem, I was doing my thing and making her pick up things and ended up giving her six Iron Shields. Now I can't get them off of her. It keeps telling me that I can't take my follower's starting equipment or whatever. She started with a Steel Shield. >:[
halp?
Kill her and take her stuff? Have you tried giving a better shield? Has the game been patched since you got it?
What version are you playing Julian? It sounds like some sort of bug.
Anyways I finally caved and rolled an alt. An Argonian mage. This is gonna be awesome. Next I'm gonna make an archer.
I had the same problem as Julian. Everything I gave Lydia ended up as her "starting equipment" in addition to being stolen. When she died - heroically - I went and sold all the crap she had nicked off me. Then I stored the Legendary Glass Battleaxe she had been using in my house as a symbol of rememberence.
If my horse Frost dies I instantly re-load a prior save. I love Frost. <3
I would have done that except I didn't realise until way way way too late. Lydia, unlike the other companions I tried to replace her with, was actually useful and would sneak and not many any noise and wouldn't bump me into an enemy I'm trying to stealth kill. So I just assumed she was doing her job until one day she wasn't there any more. I went back to the last place I remember seeing her - fighting the dragon at Kynesgrove - and there was her beautiful self, lying dead on the ground. I wept.
Also Shadowmare or whatever the Dark Brotherhood's horse is called: it died somewhere and I can't find it to make it respawn. Gosh.
If it actually died, it's probably impossible to get it back (unless you're playing the PC version). The only two ways it can actually die - as far as I know, anyway - is by either falling damage, or by being directly killed by the player. I've never seen my Shadowmere "die" in a battle against an actual enemy. It only gets downed, then gets back up.
It apparently "respawns" 24 hours later at the place of death, according to UESPWiki. Which I would think is a pretty trustworthy source.
