Equip Brawl on everybody so they can be equally useful regardless of the job class they have equipped. It's one of those traps where it is boring to do it that way, but when I try to use other abilities I spend the entire time thinking how gimped my party feels.
I do usually go Bartz/Faris as physical jobs and Lenna/Cara as magical jobs. Most of the time I am just going by primary jobs, most good secondary abilities require a lot of work to learn, which means either a ton of grinding or forcing me to be fixed in one role for a good chunk of the game.
I was a knight with time magic to speed up the party.
Faris was a black mage.
Riena a white mage.
Galuf also a black mage.
Various second abilities for other three.

I just started playing this and I have a pretty standard team.
Bartz - Knight
Lenna - W. Mage
Faris - Blk. Mage
Galuf - Monk
My basic job buildup is like this. They all master at least these jobs in castle Bal (because of the Lv 5 Death trick in the basement for good AP):
Bartz: Mystic Knight + Ninja (for dual wielding) and then hunter for Quickshot
Lenna: White Mage + Time Mage
Galuf/Krile: Blue Mage + Summoner
Faris: Black Mage + Samurai (Gill Toss, mostly)
Then all learn monk as well, for auto-counter attack, of course. And once I reach the Cleft of Dimensions, they all get to learn everything, though I never finished that, since my copy of V Advance erased my savegames whenever it wanted. Had a full bestiary up to Cleft of Dimensions, and then, tada, save game corrupt! Stopped playing after it happened for the third time.
Luckily I had the game finished on emulator a couple of times, so no loss.
Two magic users, one strong melee, and one person doing whatever else. At least one of them had healing capabilities at all times. Then as they master their jobs I swap them around.
I have this setup:
Butz: Dragoon (Duel Wield sub ability)
Lenna: Ninja (With X-strike of course)
Faris: Red Mage (Sub: Near maxed out black mage) working on dual-cast for obvious reasons.
Galuf: Summoner/white mage (nothing special here)
Gotta say, Ninjas with X-Strike (Rapid fire in some versions) are overpowered.
So far I would think this game very easy to break with some patience and planning ahead. Still it's brilliant.

Basically I work backwards from where I want to be at the end of the game. The first time I played I got to the N zone, felt frustrated, and then started over again with a plan. I've done that ever since. My favorite end team is...

Chemist/Time(quick)
Black/Thief(hermes sandals)(cast spells off of entire party to increase damage)
Samurai/Summoner(hold masamune and use carbuncle)
I only have each character ever learn 2 jobs. pro.
Last time I played the game I finished off with:
Bartz - Blue Mage/Time Mage (a lot of the game I had him as a Bard or a Hunter too)
Lenna - White Mage/Chemist (pretty standard throughout, I beefed up her healing abilities right from the start and gave her some black magic here and there and also some Trainer abilities from time to time)
Krile - Sorcerer/Ninja (wanted a balanced damage dealer, both magic and physical)
Faris - Samurai/Summoner (straight up tank character, summoning thrown in for character appropriateness (Syldra))
I like going with unconventional parties. My favourite FF games are the ones that let me just play around with party make-up to my heart's content.
