Yeah, go with the PS2. I do like my PSP but considering the majority of games I've bought for it are ports and remakes of games I own on console, I can't recommend it's library when compared to the PS2 which has quite possibly the most well rounded and solid library for a console.
Good god you kids need to take better care of your toys. My PS2 is an original fat model and still works like the day I got it. Hell, my original grey 4 AA battery Gameboy still works like the day I got it.

The PS2 wins by default because of it's awesome library. It's pretty unfair to compare the two though, as they're so radically different.
