Was Mario always this hard to turn around in mid-air in this game?

So that was the first try. It was nice playing through world 2 and 3 for once, I always warped through them.

Anyhow, are we allowed to play any version of the game? I don't know if any version plays differently than others, but I imagine if All-Stars Mario Bros controls better, then I'd go for that on my next run through.
