I think the Mario games are more innovative, but the DKC's are classic. DKC Returns is one of my favorite games for Wii.

DK had swag because he's a freakin' gorilla, and his girlfriend, Candy Kong, looks better than Princess Peach. He also have better sidekicks, like Diddy. Some like that kind of stuff over the "traditional" that Mario has. The DKC series tend to stick to the same formula without experimenting with new ideas each game like the Mario series. DK soon ventured out after the DKC, only to return to the original magic with DKC Returns.
You think Diddy Kong is better than Luigi and Yoshi? What the hell Proto?

I don't think the DKC series is quite up there with the Mario series, but boy does DKC2 come close.
DKC2 is the best platformer on the SNES.

I have a confession to make: I really don't like the Donkey Kong Country games. None of them. Can't stand to play them at all.
It's the controls that bother me to be honest. There's a crisp responsiveness that pretty much every Mario game has and which every platformer should have, which just isn't there in the DKC games. I'm not sure why, but it always feels like there's the slightest delay between button press and action and every single action just feels wrong to me as a result. Even worse is that I sometimes find myself fighting with the game as a result.
I want to like DKC. I love the characters, the level design, the exploration and everything else about them, but the most fundamental interaction with the game feels so incredibly wrong to me that I can't enjoy them at all.
Well you are controlling big apes. It takes a little while longer for them to get off the ground.

I'm not saying it doesn't make some degree of sense, I'm just saying I don't like the feel of it at all. And it makes less sense for a character like Diddy or Dixie, neither of whom I can stand either. If it was just DK feeling slow and laggy, but brutishly powerful compared to Diddy I may not have cared so much, but controlling both of them never felt right to me.
I dunno. There might be a bit too much input lag in DKC1, but I never had any problems with it in 2 and 3.

I'll admit I have far less time spent playing 2 and 3, but that was also largely because I disliked the original so much. Maybe they were better.
Both of the games are the best...But I think that Mario is more innovative and interesting then DK.
I did enjoy the Donkey Kong games on the SNES. Some of the levels were brilliantly designed. I remember playing Mine Kart Madness over and over when I first played the original. It didn't quite have the depth of gameplay that Mario brought in my opinion.
As far as sidekicks go then Yoshi pisses shell-flavoured dinosaur wee all over Diddy Kong.
