If this offer is still available, I plan on completing FFTA2 by this weekend and I'm going to fire up WoTL.
I'm not too far on WoTL myself, but I might be game? My party kinda sucks though. First playthrough FTL.
How does it even work? Is it over Wifi or do we have to be in the same room?
There are two ways:
#1 Direct Wi-fi connection between two PSPs in close proximity.
#2 Have your PSP connect to your PS3 via Wi-Fi while the PS3 is connected to the internet via a physical connection. Connect to a partner on the other end with a similar set up.

Isn't there a way to simulate ad hoc sessions with an external program like Xlink Kai?

No idea. I have never even used adHock party myself, just read about how it works.
