Yeah, I don't think it's meant to be taken seriously. It's just Capcom messing around. I think they would have went with this even if that nasty stuff didn't happen a couple months back.
I'm just going to agree with all those saying it's hilarious. I love them for doing this.

I think it is hilarious, but if this was an actual game I intended to play I would be disappointed. Funny idea, but there isn't any way I would actually enjoy playing as that in game.

^ I think he just didn't want to be at a traditional Japanese publisher anymore. This entire console generation he's been publicly fuming about how much he hates Japan.
