Rinoa and Seifer Sitting In A Tree...Maybe?

I just realized something.
Seifer and Rinoa's history is painfully vague.

1. Rinoa dated Seifer. It was last summer I believe?

2. Rinoa then goes to Balamb Garden to enlist Seifer's aid with her little wannabe revolutionary group. And we all know how she bumped into Squall.

Now I think of this like my girl dancing with my arch nemesis at our high school prom. Now I guess Rinoa didn't know Squall was Seifer's rival but point still stands that she went to see her old love and ended up dancing with another man.

I'm not trying to be a prude. I'm just...confused. What happened between Seifer and Rinoa? Is there any dialog on if they just stopped dating at some point? Were they never technically involved to begin with? I don't get it.

I dont remember anything mentioned about Seifer and Rinoa dating. (though for some reason i vaguely remember it's true.)

She went to see Cid but Seifer was the kind of go-between or contact in the first place. At least that's what I remember.

Here is the relevant dialog about their past relationship:

Rinoa: "I...really liked him. He was always full of confidence, smart... Just by talking to him, I felt like I could take on the world."

Selphie: "Your boyfriend?"

Rinoa: "I don't really know. I... I think it was love. I wonder how he felt...?

Selphie: "Do you still like him?"

Rinoa: "If I didn't, I wouldn't be talking about it. It was last summer... I was 16. Lots of fond memories..."

i believe there is also some optional dialog you can get with a random Forest Owl while you're on their base. It mentions Rinoa being with a guy a lot last summer or whatever. It's been like eight years since I played this game though so I don't recall the exact details.

So I think that the story of Rinoa and Seifer is completely in Rinoa's mind. Really, nothing happened, she probably loved him but never spoke with him about her feelings.

I remember reading that Nomura wanted their to be a strong love triangle in the story when they were first planning verything out but it apparently got tossed into the background, so its possible that Seifer and Rinoa were a bit more serious than is implied. Though the dialogue EyesOnFF8, posted give me the opinion that something did happen but Rinoa probably thought it was a grand romance and Seifer thought it was just a summer fling. I could have sworn that Seifer does mention Rinoa during the Dollet mission or had some dialogue concerning their relationship during the times they fight him either in the Galbadia Garden or in the Lunatic Pandora.I could be wrong, its been a few years since I've played completely through the game myself.

Yeah Seifer has different dialogue for whatever party member you confront him with on Galbadia Garden at the end of Disk 2.

For Rinoa, it's:

Seifer: Rinoa, what are you doing here? You gonna fight me, too? Come on, remember a year ago we...

I'm actually replaying FFVIII right now and I'll have to make a separate thread on re-evaluating the game after i finish it. I gotta say, I'm enjoying myself.....
