Dancing Chocobo Let's talk about Super Mario RPG

Because it's one of the best games of all time.

What party did you use, for example? Mario/Mallow/Geno here, because I'm hardcore like that.

Also: that glorious music. That Midas River.

I never got what the big deal was about SM-RPG. It's a fun game to play, but I always considered it a just so-so JRPG. Everyone who brings it up seems to consider it the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Although, maybe my experience is different because JRPGs have never been my genre forte. Maybe I sound to you like someone would sound to me if they excitedly ran up to me and told me that Starcraft 2 was the best strategy game ever, and I'd have to smile and nod and hope that someday they found all the true classics. Who knows! All I know is that of all the RPGs I've played, SMRPG is the most charming and (SPOILER)fun. My opinion, though!

Or it's just me. I feel almost the same way about Eathbound, which seems to have a very similar following.

I don't go all crazy for SMRPG, but I do think it was an excellent game that set out to do exactly what it promised. My party was usually Mario/Bowser/Geno or Princess.

Like Velo, I don't understand what all the hype is about, so I had to try this 'sliced bread' out for myself. It's actually a pretty innovative and fun way to have your bread, but I still wouldn't say it's better than Super Mario RPG.

My favorite party is Mario, Geno, and Peach (I think she was still called Toadstool back in those days). Peach with the frypan is unstoppable. She also has a nice variety of spells that includes healing and attack spells.

The battles are awesome. I think it was the first time a turn based system ever made you press buttons during attacks to enhance/defend against them. It was pretty cool. There's also a good amount of extras to go after and plenty of humor.

One thing that annoyed me about this game were that one part near the beginning where you had to jump on the toad's head to get to a hidden treasure chest, or else it becomes permanently missable. Also I was never able to do enough jumps in a row to get the top prize.

    It's alright.

    Paper Mario is better.

And Paper Mario 2 is outstanding.

I haven't played it since I was 11 or 12. I'm still willing to bet it kicks as much ass now as it did to me then. My favourite team was Mario, Princess, Bowser. I wish I was a kid so I could be blown away again for getting to team up with Bowser.

Part of me wants to smack you and disagree, because you're Roto, and it feels obligatory.

But while SMRPG is great, there are a lot of better RPG's on the SNES and Paper Mario is in fact superior. I didn't play much of Thousand Year Door though, oddly enough my game cube stopped working around then, but what little I played was pretty rad.

And smurf you all, Earthbound is amazing.

Super Mario RPG has a charm that later Mario role-playing games cannot match because it was made by the now defunct Squaresoft. I think it has the added advantage of childhood nostalgia for some gamers. That is my opinion on the subject, anyway.

SM-RPG, Earth Bound, BoF II and Chrono Trigger are still the only games of the SNES genre I can think of that compare to Final Fantasy excellence...hell, for me none of those games have created a following game in there series to surpass them.

I like SMRPG. It is whimsical and creative. I have never been able to do all of the things that one needs to get all of the extra stuff and I think that helps add to the charm. It was more than just finding stuff. It required a lot of good timing which is a key aspect of a good platformer. The areas were creative and the music was awesome. I think it is one of the best RPGs on the SNES.

Having said that, I don't like Earthbound or Paper Mario.
