And if so, how did it go? Is it really as difficult as they say?

It is nuts, just try it. go through most of the game dealing 50 damage at most. I don't think it is possible without tons of potions and grinding to make it past marilith.

I seem to remember someone doing a White Mage challenge and posting about it here. Anyone remember that?
I haven't done it, though I imagine it does take a lot of grinding and restarts.
To me that seems less of a challenge and more of an exercise in patience and repetition.

I seem to recall someone telling me that there was some other party combination that was more difficult, can't remember what it was, though. And maybe they were just trying to be hipster about it.
four monks, no healing at all is pretty hard sometimes against high magic defense. white mage is worst though

It is possible to beat the game with a solo White Mage. Not even White Wizzard, solo White Mage with no class change.
To my knowledge the only one that hasn't been completed successfully is solo Thief. (On the NES version)

solo thief is one of the easiest. Seriously.

I have seen a screen cap in this very forum of someone doing a solo Thief. Can't find it at the moment.
I'd think it'd be more mind-numbingly tedious than hard.
I like Kung-Fu.
I tried once a long long time ago but stopped at the Marsh Cave.
That was the challenge in the very first issue of Nintendo Power after it became a magazine instead of a newsletter.Originally Posted by Raistlin

I tried four White Mages. I didn't find myself dying very often; I just didn't find myself having the patience to actually play the game that way at all. I think I got to the same place I always get when I play through this game: Elfland. The grinding in that area takes so damn long that every time I play this game there's a 50/50 chance I will stop there, and with four White Mages waving their useless hammers over and over, I just plain could. Not. Be. Arsed.
So to answer the original thread question: depends on your definition of "difficult."

I seen youtubers beat the game low leveled four WMs no class change and when beating chaos that person was at lvl 8!!!
I am so good a final fantasy but i never beat it before
(i am still stuck leveling up to go safely though the past)
Well, while we're speaking in zombies...
Don't know how I missed this the first time around but four monks is so easy it's crazy. There's a few rough patches in the beginning but it isn't very long before they start destroying everything before it can hurt them. I have a 4-monk thread playthrough in this forum somewhere.four monks, no healing at all is pretty hard sometimes against high magic defense. white mage is worst though

I beat the PSP version with 4xWW. It was rather easy, actually. It will be much, much harder on NES, once your run out of FADE charges.
MP reserves are practically bottomless in GBA/PSP though, which helps out mage parties a lot.
